Failover
Business internet failover is a second internet connection that takes over automatically when your primary line goes down. Your firewall watches the main circuit, and when it stops passing traffic, routing switches to the backup within seconds. When the primary comes back, traffic switches home again.
The part most businesses get wrong is buying a second circuit from the same carrier, over the same physical path, into the same building entry point. When a backhoe finds that conduit, both circuits go down together. Real redundancy means a different carrier, a different medium, or both — fibre backed by fixed wireless, or fibre backed by 4G/5G cellular.
What your team notices during a failover depends on what they are doing. Email and file sync recover on their own. Anything holding a live session — a VoIP call in progress, a remote desktop connection — typically drops and needs reconnecting, which takes seconds rather than minutes.
Automatic failover switches without anyone doing anything. Manual means someone has to notice and swap a cable — which does not help at 6am on a Saturday.
A backup on the same carrier and same conduit is not a backup. Different carrier, different medium, ideally a different building entry.
A backup circuit does not have to match your primary. It has to carry phones, email, and your line-of-business apps until the main line returns.
Failover that has never been tested is a theory. We fail it over deliberately so the first real test is not during an actual outage.
The useful way to size this is not to look up an industry downtime statistic — it is to work out your own number. Take your staff cost for an hour, add the revenue you cannot collect while card payments and phones are down, and multiply by how long your carrier realistically takes to restore service. For most Las Vegas offices the honest answer to that last part is half a day, not half an hour.
Then compare it to the monthly cost of a backup circuit, which for a small office is usually in the range of a phone bill. If a single half-day outage costs more than a year of backup connectivity, the decision makes itself.
There is a second cost people forget: the outages that are not total. A circuit that drops for ninety seconds every twenty minutes does not register as "the internet is down," but it drops calls, stalls uploads, and burns a day of everyone's patience. Those are often harder to get a carrier to act on, which is where having someone who will escalate on your behalf matters. Business internet is not residential service with a different invoice. A commercial circuit comes with a service level agreement, a repair commitment, static addressing where you need it, and a support queue that does not begin by asking you to reboot the router.
What is actually available at your address varies street by street in Las Vegas, and often building by building. A suite in a Sahara Avenue office park may have three fibre carriers already in the riser; a warehouse near the 15 may have none, and fixed wireless is the realistic answer. We check what is genuinely serviceable at your location before recommending anything — not what a carrier's coverage map claims.
If you are moving offices, this is worth starting earlier than feels necessary. A new fibre build can take 60 to 120 days when construction is required, and that timeline is the one thing no amount of escalation compresses.
Once your phones are VoIP and your files are in Microsoft 365, your internet connection stops being a convenience and becomes the thing the business runs on. An outage no longer means "we cannot browse the web" — it means the phones are dead and nobody can open a document.
Call quality is also more sensitive to jitter and packet loss than to raw speed. A connection that benchmarks well can still produce choppy calls if it is unstable under load. We size and configure circuits with voice traffic prioritised, which is usually the difference between VoIP that works and VoIP people complain about.
