The Real Problem

Bad Office Wi-Fi Is Almost Never
Fixed by a Better Router

The usual sequence goes like this. Wi-Fi is patchy at one end of the office, so somebody buys a faster router. It does not help. Then somebody adds a range extender, which appears to help for a week and then makes things worse, because extenders halve throughput and create a second network that devices cling to long after they should have handed off.

The underlying cause is almost always one of four things, and none of them is router speed.

Too few access points

One device cannot cover a building. Coverage is a function of how many radios you have and where they are, not how expensive one of them was.

Placed for cabling, not coverage

Access points end up wherever a cable already ran — often a comms cupboard in a corner, radiating half its signal into the car park.

Consumer gear, commercial job

Home equipment is built for a handful of devices and no handoff between units. It does not fail loudly — it just degrades as you add people.

Interference and building materials

Concrete, metal racking, mirrored glass, and the six neighbouring networks in your building all take signal away. Drywall barely matters; a lift shaft does.

We Measure Before
We Specify Anything

A Wi-Fi site survey means walking the space with measurement tools and recording what actually happens — signal strength room by room, where coverage drops, which channels your neighbours are saturating, and where the dead spots really are rather than where people report them.

That last distinction matters more than it sounds. The complaint is usually “the Wi-Fi is bad in the back office,” and the measurement often shows the back office is fine but the access point serving it is overloaded because forty devices in the open-plan area are also attached to it. Fixing the reported symptom would have achieved nothing.

We survey the space in its working state — people at desks, racking stocked, doors where they normally are. An empty building surveys beautifully and tells you very little.

Access Point Design
and Installation

Once the survey is done, the design is mostly arithmetic: how many access points, mounted where, on which channels, at what power. Turning the power up on everything is the common mistake — it makes access points shout over each other and stops devices roaming cleanly between them.

Business access points also hand off properly. A laptop carried from a desk to a meeting room should move between radios without dropping the call it is on. That behaviour is the practical difference between commercial equipment and a mesh kit from an electronics shop, and it is the thing people notice immediately once it works.

Where new cabling is needed, we coordinate it with vetted local low-voltage partners rather than pretending it does not exist — cable runs are usually the largest part of a wireless project, and hiding that from a quote helps nobody.

Guest and Staff Traffic,
Properly Separated

Sharing one wireless network between staff and visitors is one of the more common security gaps we find, and it is also one of the easiest to close. A visitor’s laptop — which you know nothing about — should not be able to reach your file server, your accounting workstation, or the camera system.

Proper separation puts guest traffic on its own isolated network with no route to internal systems, its own password, and a bandwidth cap so a visitor streaming video does not slow your team down. On business equipment this is a configuration choice. On consumer gear the “guest network” option often only hides the SSID rather than genuinely isolating traffic.

The same principle applies to anything you would not want on the main network — cameras, door controllers, point-of-sale terminals, and equipment from a vendor who will not tell you what firmware it runs. Segmentation of that kind is part of our wider cybersecurity services.

Warehouses, Jobsites
and Multi-Suite Buildings

Some spaces need designing rather than covering. These are the ones where a standard office approach reliably fails.

Warehouses and shops

Steel racking blocks signal, and full racking behaves differently from empty. High ceilings need mounting plans, and scanners need coverage in the aisles rather than above them.

Jobsites and trailers

Temporary site offices need coverage that goes up quickly and comes down again. Often paired with cellular connectivity rather than a wired circuit — see IT for construction.

Multi-suite properties

Leasing offices, common areas, and tenant spaces each need their own separation. Neighbouring networks are the main interference source — see IT for property management.

Outdoor areas and yards

Loading bays and yards need outdoor-rated hardware. In Las Vegas the summer temperature range is a genuine specification constraint, not a footnote.

Wireless Is Not
a One-Time Project

A design that fits your business today drifts as things change. You take the suite next door, a neighbour installs their own network on your channel, headcount grows by a third, or racking goes in where there used to be open floor. None of those announce themselves — the Wi-Fi just gets gradually worse until somebody complains.

Why does our office Wi-Fi keep dropping?

Nearly always one of four things: too few access points for the space, access points placed for cabling convenience rather than coverage, consumer equipment doing a commercial job, or interference from neighbouring networks and equipment. How many access points does an office need?

It depends on the construction of the building and the number of devices, not just the floor area. Drywall is fairly transparent to Wi-Fi; concrete, brick, metal shelving, and mirrored glass are not. As a rough starting point, a typical open-plan office needs one access point per two to three thousand square feet, but a warehouse with steel racking or an older building with plaster and lath can need considerably more. Device count matters as much as area — a twenty-person office where everyone runs a laptop, a phone, and a headset is supporting sixty connections.

Do we need a separate guest network?

Yes. A visitor's laptop should never be on the same network as your accounting workstation or your file server. A properly separated guest network isolates visitor traffic entirely, so a compromised device in your waiting area cannot reach anything that matters. It also lets you cap guest bandwidth so someone streaming video does not slow down your staff. This is straightforward to configure on business equipment and impossible to do properly on consumer gear.

Can you fix Wi-Fi in a warehouse or shop floor?

Yes, and these environments need designing rather than guessing. Steel racking, high ceilings, concrete, forklifts, and moving stock all affect coverage, and racking that is full behaves differently from racking that is empty. Outdoor yards and loading areas need hardware rated for the temperature range, which in Las Vegas is a real constraint rather than a formality. We survey the space in its working state, not empty.
